Found in the gastrointestinal tract, the three Trefoil proteins, TFF1, 2, and 3 have been shown to play an important role in intestinal mucosal defence and repair. Specifically, TFF1 is essential for normal differentiation of the antral and pyloric gastric mucosa and functions as a gastric-specific tumor suppressor gene.
