PIP4K2A or phosphatidylinositol-5-phosphate 4-kinase, type II, alpha, is a member of the phosphatidylinositol-5-phosphate 4-kinase family that catalyzes the phosphorylation of phosphatidylinositol-5-phosphate on the fourth hydroxyl of the myo-inositol ring to form phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate . PIP4K2A plays as essential role in the phosphoinositide signal transduction cascades as the precursor to second messengers and is involved in the regulation of secretion, cell proliferation, differentiation, and motility . PIP4K2A may be one of the factors related to the regulation of the beta-globin gene expression and the different levels of Hb H in alpha-thalassemic patients.
