DYRK4 or dual-specificity tyrosine-(Y)-phosphorylation regulated kinase 4 plays an important role in cell proliferation, survival, and development . Northern blot analysis shows DYRK4 is highly expressed in the testis with a very restricted expression to stage VIII postmeiotic spermatids . Analysis of a DYRK4 deficient mouse line showed that DYRK4 is dispensable for male fertility, hence suggesting a functional redundancy of some DYRK isoforms during spermiogenesis. DYRK4 protein contains a DYRK homology box in its N-terminal half, followed by a central kinase domain with a YxY loop.
