Primary Normal Human Kidney Mesangial (NhKM) cells are obtained after kidney cortex digestion, and single glomerular isolation. Glomeruli are further digested and then NhKM cells are isolated by PDGFR? positive selection. NhMK cells are located in the glomerulus and act to fill the gap between adjacent capillary loops surrounded by the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) and the podocytes. Their primary function is to remove trapped residues and aggregated protein from the GBM. They also aid filtration by constituting part of the glomerular capillary tuft structure that filters fluids to produce urine. Primary NhKM cells have been used to research function and pathophysiology of the kidney, toxicity, drug transporters, capillary flow in the renal system, urine regulation and more.
