Primary Normal Human Kidney Cortical (NhKC) cells (UMIX population) are isolated from the kidney cortex after removal of the kidney capsule and medulla. The major type of cells that can be identified are proximal tubules, distal tubules, endothelial cells (including glomerular endothelial cells), mesangial cells, podocytes, interstitial fibroblasts, residing renal adult progenitor cells and juxtaglomerular cells. This mixture is advantageous because it can be utilized to study heterogeneous kidney populations, or it can be processed further into homogenous cell populations. Primary NhKC cells have been used to research function and pathophysiology of the kidney, toxicity, drug transporters, tissue engineering, urine regulation and more.
