Solute carrier family 22 (extraneuronal monoamine transporter) member 3, also known as OCT3, is a protein that in humans is encoded by the SLC22A3 gene. This gene is mapped to 6q25.3. Polyspecific organic cation transporters in the liver, kidney, intestine, and other organs are critical for elimination of many endogenous small organic cations as well as a wide array of drugs and environmental toxins. This gene mediates potential-dependent transport of a variety of organic cations. It may play a significant role in the disposition of cationic neurotoxins and neurotransmitters in the brain.
