Description	The MSH6 protein is a member of the Mutator S (MutS) family of proteins that are involved in the DNA damage repair. It contains the Walker-A/B adenine nucleotide binding motif, which is highly conserved in all the MutS homologs. Damage to DNA, damage to nuclear precursors, errors during DNA replication and formations of intermediates during genetic recombination can cause mismatched base pairs. MSH2/MSH6 (MutS-alpha) is involved primarily in base substitution and small-loop mismatch repair. Mutations in MSH6 have been implicated in hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer and several other cancers such as ovarian, stomach and endometrial cancer.
