Description	Actin is a major component of the cytoskeleton and is present in every cell type. It is a globular protein, about 5 nm in diameter, composed of one polypeptide chain with a mass of approximately 47 kD. Four muscle actins have been identified: skeletal alpha, cardiac alpha, vascular smooth muscle alpha, and enteric smooth muscle gamma actin. These actins are very similar in their primary structure. In addition, two other cytoplasmic actins (beta and gamma) have been identified; they are highly homologous to one another, but differ from the muscle-specific actins. Monoclonal Actin88 is for the specific localization of actins in muscle tissue. Staining with this antibody distinguishes smooth muscle cells from fibroblasts in mixed cultures.
