Description	Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a 170 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein receptor tyrosine kinase that, activated by epidermal growth factor (EGF), affects cell growth and differentiation. Binding of EGF or TGF alpha to EGFR activates tyrosine kinase activity of the receptor. EGFR associated with a number of cancers, including lung cancer, anal cancers and glioblastoma multiforme. These somatic mutations involving EGFR lead to its constant activation, which produces uncontrolled cell division. In breast cancer, EGFR is predorminately expressed in basal cell-like carcinoma; it has been recommendated for identification of basal-like breast carcinoma along with Cytokeratin 5/6.
