UCP are mitochondrial transporter proteins that create proton leaks across the inner mitochondrial membrane, thus uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis. As a result, energy is dissipated in the form of heat.
Specificity
Natural and recombinant Pig Mitochondrial uncoupling protein 2
Subcellular Location
Mitochondrion inner membrane Multi-pass membrane protein
"Characterization of the porcine uncoupling proteins 2 and 3 (UCP2 and 3) and their localization to chromosome 9p by somatic cell hybrids." Werner P., Nowaczyk K., Neuenschwander S., Strazinger G. Submitted (1997-12) to the EMBL/GenBank/DDBJ databases
