Background
Renin is a protease that is synthesized by the kidneys. Renin catalyzesthe hydrolysis of angiotensinogen to angiotensin I, which is converted to angiotensin II, ahighly potent vasoconstrictor. Renin inhibitors have been used therapeutically in thetreatment of hypertension (high blood pressure).
